Thanks is advance for sending me some info and comments on this forum.

I remember the beginnings of the national/international "Deacon Line." I joined in 1996, and at that time there were less than 50 deacons registered (i.e., maybe 2% of all USA deacons). It has now grown to over 500. So about 5% of the Omaha community has registered - I call that a "normal" growth pattern. (What I find Really Strange is that the full Council membership, and all Area Reps and back-ups haven't signed up... Where does Commitment begin, except at the "TOP"? ...

It looks like the perennial problem of "declining attendance" appears at all levels: this new Forum; picnics; Area Meetings; and if you took away "Mandatory" attendance for formandi on 3rd Saturdays, maybe that too?

Question: how can one best get Feedback from the community on "Why" the decline; and secondly, how could we get the Absentees (i.e., the Declinees) somehow communicate their reasons why they no longer attend - or at least infrequently?

Ash Wednesday

I have never been involved with preparing the ashes for distribution. Today, the ashes at my church were very dry, drier that I have ever seen before; and therefore they did not go on to people's foreheads very well. By the time I got home there was no evidence that I had received ashes. The priest did bless the ashes and sprinkle a little bit of holy water on them but not much.

Does anyone know if water is usually added in order to make the ashes moister?

Deacon Denny Connor's homily during morning prayer was fantastic!

He really hit the nail on the head talking about community and our obligation as members of the deacon community to show up and network with each other. We need to be at community gatherings, i.e., 3rd Saturdays, retreats, the anniversary dinner, in order to share our experiences, our faith, our hope with each other and to be nutured by others.

 Thanks Denny, great job!

Was anyone else as blown away last night as I was? What a presentation! I have listened to Jim before, but he has never grabbed me as he did last night. He had me from begining to end. I knew that he knows his Theology, but I never thought that I would be that enthused and excited about it. I can't wait for the next 2 weeks now. My paper on Christology had to stretch to make 3 pages. After last night I will have to edit to get this one down to 5!
